Sabbatikal is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition, Gathered at the Well, opening Saturday, February 15th, 2025, at its new space in Santa Monica, California. This group exhibition reflects on the timeless themes of connection, renewal, and shared presence through the lens of art and philosophy.

Drawing inspiration from Simone Weil’s The Need for Roots, the teachings of Christ, the wisdom of Chief Seattle, and visionaries like Allen Ginsberg, James Baldwin, Sylvia Rivera, and Marsha P. Johnson, the exhibition explores what it means to belong to ourselves, to one another, and to the world we inhabit. Rather than offering definitive answers, Gathered at the Well invites visitors to ask: How can art help us reimagine and restore our relationships with community, nature, and our inner lives?

Rooted in these ideas, the exhibition features diverse media, including painting, sculpture, installation, and participatory projects. Together, the artworks evoke the well as a symbol of sustenance, a place where people come together to draw not only water, but also strength, stories, and solidarity.

Simone Weil described “uprootedness” as a profound disconnection from cultural and spiritual ties essential for human flourishing. She advocated for spaces that nurture belonging and purpose. Echoing this sentiment, the words of Christ urge us to seek treasures that nourish the soul: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). Chief Seattle’s wisdom reminds us of our interdependence with the earth:

"We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth, and it is part of us."

Modern thinkers and activists also offer profound insights. Allen Ginsberg’s poetry critiques the alienation bred by materialism and modern society, calling for spiritual enlightenment and connection. James Baldwin emphasized the necessity of community as a refuge in a world that often denies people their humanity. Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson built sanctuaries for LGBTQAI+ community members, teaching us that true community uplifts those most often marginalized. Their collective wisdom reinforces the belief that “they,” or the “other,” are in fact, us.

Through these interwoven perspectives, Gathered at the Well suggests that the simple act of gathering, whether around a literal or metaphorical well, can be transformative. Creativity, contemplation, and connection emerge as essential tools for navigating the challenges of modern life.

The exhibition features works by Clarisse Abelarde, Isabella Innis, Shaina McCoy, Jasaya Neale, Paul Paiement, Vasco Del Rey, Kevin Sabo, and Cheyann Washington. Each artist offers a unique perspective, contributing to the collective exploration of rootedness and renewal. Their works not only reflect their individual visions but also invite viewers into dialogue and discovery.

Sabbatikal’s founder, Sacha Cohen, shares:

“We see this exhibition as an invitation, a way to explore how art can become a catalyst for grounding ourselves, and engaging more deeply with others and the world around us. The works featured here are not just expressions; they are starting points for dialogue and discovery.”

Gathered at the Well runs from February 15th to March 30th, 2025, at Sabbatikal, 1226 25th Street, Santa Monica, CA. The opening reception will take place on February 15th from 2 to 6 PM and is open to the public. Afterward, visits are available by appointment or during scheduled events. Sabbatikal hosts bi-weekly private gatherings that provide additional opportunities to engage with the exhibition.

We invite you to join us at Sabbatikal and experience this convergence of art, reflection, and community.
