Kevin Sabo

Kevin Sabo, born in 1992, is an American painter based in Richmond, Virginia. He earned his BFA in Studio Art from James Madison University. Sabo's work delves into themes of queer identity, satire, and existential revelations, often portrayed through expressive, character-driven figures. His paintings are known for their vibrant colors and dynamic compositions, reflecting a playful yet critical examination of societal norms.

In his Richmond studio, Sabo employs a multimedia approach, utilizing acrylics, ink, spray paint, and collage to create his distinctive works. For his contribution to "Gathered At The Well," Sabo presents ‘Maneater I’ (2024), a 48 x 36-inch acrylic and graphite on canvas piece. This striking artwork exemplifies Sabo’s bold exploration of gender roles, interpersonal dynamics, and the fluidity of identity. Featuring a group of elongated, surreal figures in motion, Maneater I uses exaggerated forms and vivid color contrasts to challenge societal expectations and celebrate individuality. The composition’s energy and surrealism invite viewers to reflect on themes of power, desire, and collective identity.

Sabo is set to participate in David Maxwell’s Flower Residency in Atwater Village in April, where he will explore new directions in his work and engage with other artists in an immersive creative environment. This residency will serve as an opportunity for him to further investigate his themes of satire, identity, and personal expression.
