Introduction

Cheyann Washington is a Belizean-American painter based in South Los Angeles. Her work delves into the essence of human behavior and its reflection in nature, creating a dialogue that bridges the organic and the human experience. Through various techniques, including drawing and painting, Washington encapsulates this relationship, often utilizing natural pigments and materials to deepen the connection between her art and the environment.

"I aim to illustrate the nurturing bond that exists within us and the natural world, exploring the balance and imbalance that coexist."

Studio & Process

In her studio, Washington engages in the meticulous creation of her own natural pigments, derived from rocks, minerals, and other organic materials. She applies these pigments to silk and homemade paper, crafting figurative artworks that mirror natural phenomena such as photosynthesis, metamorphosis, and the cycles of the sun and moon. Her studies extend into biology and natural medicines, including ethnobotany, and often involve personal examinations of her own body, further intertwining her art with themes of growth and transformation.

"Each piece is a journey, a process of understanding the systems within us and around us, where imbalance and balance coexist."

In ‘Green Playing With Yellow’ (2020), Washington presents an abstract representation of nature as a playful guardian. Utilizing natural pigments on silk, Washington draws parallels between plant life and human existence.

What’s Next?

Washington continues to explore the resilience and persistence found in nature. Her upcoming solo exhibition, "We Insist On Growing," at Wönzimer, showcases her latest paintings, sculptures, and ventures into ceramics, all reflecting themes of growth, interconnection, and the enduring power of nature.
