Tatiana Gorgievski

Painting Beyond the Limits of Language

A candid studio portrait of Tatiana Gorgievski, capturing her working among large-scale paintings, pure pigments, and figures emerging through layers of color.

Introduction

Tatiana Gorgievski’s paintings explore the body as a site of desire, vulnerability, violence, and transformation. Born in Paris in 1997, Tatiana first studied philosophy at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon before turning toward painting as a more immediate way of confronting reality. She later received her master’s degree in painting from ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels and now lives and works in Paris. EDJI Gallery

Rather than illustrating predetermined narratives, Tatiana creates visceral encounters in which tenderness and brutality, presence and disappearance, coexist. Her figures emerge from the physical substance of paint as ambiguous beings caught between isolation and intimacy, giving form to experiences that resist explanation.

Studio & Process

In her Paris studio, Tatiana works with oil paint and pure pigments on canvas and wood panels. She begins without preparatory sketches or a fixed composition, allowing color to spread, collide, and accumulate across the surface. Figures gradually reveal themselves through this encounter with the material, then deepen as she scrapes, layers, and reworks the paint.

Acidic colors, spectral blues, and sudden passages of vermilion give her bodies an electric, almost epidermal presence. Working at a scale that corresponds closely to the human body, Tatiana draws viewers into a direct physical relationship with each painting. What begins as an intuitive exchange with paint ultimately opens onto themes of childhood, sexuality, dispossession, desire, and the complicated bonds between self and others.

Feature Artwork: “Driven”

In Driven (2025), two monumental figures fold into one another beneath a luminous field of green and blue. One body appears to support—or restrain—the other, while their saturated pink, violet, and vermilion forms remain suspended between embrace and confrontation.

Built from energetic layers of oil paint, the figures seem simultaneously anchored and on the verge of dissolving. Their uncertain relationship reflects Tatiana’s interest in how bodies seek stability through contact, transforming intimacy into a charged negotiation between desire, dependence, and disappearance.

What’s Next?

Tatiana continues to explore the body as both an autonomous presence and a place of connection. Following residencies at the Moonens Foundation and The Cabin in Los Angeles, her recent paintings increasingly affirm the figure’s ability to occupy space despite its vulnerability. Through large-scale canvases and works on panel, she is expanding this investigation into how a body can hold itself, support another, and resist disappearing.
